The advantages of Latvian residence
Latvian status in the heart of the European Union, with tax treatment assessed for your situation.
Visa-free Schengen travel
Visit other Schengen states for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your permit gives you a right to reside in Latvia, not throughout the EU.
Tax position assessed separately
A SIA benefits from 0% CIT on reinvested profits. Our Latvian tax residence guide explains the declared-address test, the 183-day test and treaty rules in case of conflict.
Healthcare depends on your status
Registration with the Latvian system and EHIC eligibility depend on your social-security coverage. Private insurance may be required for your permit or family.
A stronger local banking file
A residence permit and local activity strengthen your KYC file. Account opening and lending remain subject to each institution's own decision.

Frequently asked questions
No, not necessarily. Under Latvian domestic law, tax residence can arise from a declared address (deklarētā dzīvesvieta) or from spending 183 days or more in any 12-month period. A residence permit, SIA and bank account do not by themselves settle a conflict with another country: the tie-breaker rules of the applicable tax treaty apply.
Yes. Your spouse and minor children can obtain a derivative residence permit. Children have access to the Latvian school system (international schools available in Riga) and the whole family benefits from European healthcare coverage.
Validity and renewal depend on the legal basis used. From 15 September 2026, the SIA board-member and share-capital investment routes are limited to two years per permit and require their conditions to remain satisfied. Permanent residence may be requested after five years of lawful and continuous residence, subject to conditions.
The permit lets you reside in Latvia and make short visits to other Schengen states under the 90/180 rule. Healthcare depends on insurance and social-security status; banks apply their own KYC. Tax residence is a separate assessment.
